October Issue Brief: Equity-Focused Social Emotional Learning

What flavor is your school’s social emotional learning (SEL) program? While early SEL programs were focused on changing student behaviors, newer equity-focused SEL approaches emphasize building relationships and creating learning environments that empower student wholeness, voice, and agency.

In Core Education’s October issue brief, we explore emerging insights into how equity-focused SEL can contribute to more just, caring schools and learning communities where all individuals can thrive. We review district practices that serve as exemplars of integrated equity and SEL strategies, and we provide information related to systemic reform that uses SEL as a lever for equity and excellence. In addition, we provide a look into how these approaches are experienced by youth.
