February Issue Brief: College Readiness

In Case You Missed It!This year the United States hit a record high graduation rate of 83 percent, and 66 percent of graduating students enrolled in college. But we are discovering that high school graduation does not necessarily equate to readiness for college coursework. NAEP data show that only 37 percent of high school seniors are academically prepared for college, and this number has remained flat for the past 20 years. While our graduation and college enrollment data are rising, the ‘preparedness gap’ is increasing.

In this month’s issue brief, we explore the complexities of college readiness, examine parent perceptions, and look at what states can do to address this issue.
