Almost all top-performing education systems transitioned to distance learning this past spring so students could continue learning during coronavirus-related school closures. In a new paper<\/a>, NCEE summarizes initial takeaways from their experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They found that top-performing jurisdictions: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

-Were initially better positioned than the U.S. to quickly implement distance learning;\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-Increased capacity in this area since the start of distance learning; and\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-Responded rapidly to new challenges raised by distance learning.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The paper also looks toward the future, as jurisdictions worldwide reflect on what they learned during the spring distance learning experiment and consider the role of online and in-person schooling in the fall and beyond. The report concludes that the continuing emergency will likely accelerate the integration of technology into the teaching and learning process, and promote the idea of organizing learning in different settings, in and out of traditional school buildings, and in different ways for different students.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
