Excerpts from the piece appear below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Advanced learning programs <em>are<\/em> effective, and we have reams of research to support that conclusion. What follows is a rough summary of intervention research, listed from more to less evidence of effectiveness. For the purposes of this post, \u201cevidence of effectiveness\u201d is defined as research on positive student outcomes, broadly defined, with a bias toward experimental studies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Acceleration<\/strong> is one of the most-studied intervention strategies in all of education, with overwhelming evidence of positive effects on student achievement. See the resources from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accelerationinstitute.org\/\">the Belin-Blank Center<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.3102\/0034654316675417\">this meta-analysis<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ability grouping:<\/strong> While findings are not as clear cut as acceleration research, studies find convincing evidence that flexible ability grouping is a net positive for the student learning of our most and least advanced students. The meta-analysis linked above found evidence within-class ability grouping was most effective for promoting advanced learning among various grouping strategies, and other studies suggest that flexible ability grouping may help close excellence gaps. The field\u2019s growing research base on curriculum models can also be placed in this category, and<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/0014402914527244\"> studies<\/a> suggest that pre-differentiated, prescriptive curricula leads to significant growth in advanced learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Enrichment:<\/strong> It is difficult to determine the actual impact of enrichment programs. Research shows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/13803610701785972\">mixed<\/a> but generally promising results, especially for summer, residential enrichment\u2014such as these examples <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/0016986216630607\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iratde.com\/index.php\/jtde\/article\/view\/49\">here<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/citeseerx.ist.psu.edu\/viewdoc\/download?doi=10.1.1.618.8821&amp;rep=rep1&amp;type=pdf\">here<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Selective high schools:<\/strong> Among the oldest strategies for advanced education are public high schools that selectively choose high-performing students based on entrance exam scores, hence the label \u201cexam schools.\u201d Despite the long history of this approach to advanced learning, very few experimental studies exist, and other sophisticated research designs often produce mixed-to-negative results (examples <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nber.org\/papers\/w17264.pdf\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.aeaweb.org\/doi\/pdfplus\/10.1257\/app.6.3.58\">here<\/a>).
