Excerpts from his piece appear below:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Teachers of color are still a small share of the teaching force.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1987, about 87 percent of public school teachers were white. In the 2015-16 school year, just over 80 percent of teachers were white. During that same time period, the raw number of teachers of color went from 305,000 out of well over 2 million teachers to about 760,000 out of nearly 4 million teachers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That means there are a few ways to frame the exact <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nces.ed.gov\/programs\/digest\/d17\/tables\/dt17_209.10.asp?current=yes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">same data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: You could emphasize that the number of teachers of color has increased by 150 percent in nearly three decades. But you could also say that the share of teachers of color has increased only 7 percentage points during that time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both are accurate, though they suggest very different stories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 150 percent increase looks so large in part because there were few teachers of color to begin with. It\u2019s also focusing on the raw numbers at a time when total number of teachers has ballooned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That means the r<\/span>aw increase doesn\u2019t translate to teachers of color making up much more of the profession. The teaching force remains overwhelmingly white, even as <a href=\"https:\/\/nces.ed.gov\/programs\/raceindicators\/indicator_rbb.asp\">about half<\/a> of the students attending public schools in the U.S. are students of color.<\/p>\n<h4><b>The statistics are particularly grim for black teachers.<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between 1987 and 2015, the number of black teachers increased from around 191,000 to 256,000. But the share of teachers who are black has actually declined, from 8.2 percent to 6.7 percent. That\u2019s possible, again, because the teaching corps as a whole has grown significantly during that same period, outpacing the increase in students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These trends haven\u2019t played out the same way for all teachers of color. Over that same period, the number and the share of Hispanic teachers have both grown substantially, jumping from 69,000 to 338,000 and from 3 to 8.8 percent of the total teaching force.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Why has the progress, in terms of increasing the share of non-white teachers, been so modest?<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ingersoll documents that teachers of color have particularly high turnover rates, and shows that is largely a function of where they work: in segregated schools that have particularly high attrition rates. That\u2019s in line with other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chalkbeat.org\/posts\/us\/2018\/07\/25\/black-teachers-leave-schools-at-higher-rates-but-why\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">detailed research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> out of North Carolina.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additional expectations of teachers of color \u2014 such as black men being tasked with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chalkbeat.org\/posts\/us\/2018\/03\/16\/disciplinarians-first-and-teachers-second-black-male-teachers-say-they-face-extra-burden\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serving as disciplinarians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 also may contribute to burnout.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other possible explanations include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/posts\/us\/2017\/09\/12\/certification-rules-and-tests-are-keeping-would-be-teachers-of-color-out-of-americas-classrooms-heres-how\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">certification processes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that disproportionately screen out prospective teachers of color; the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/posts\/us\/2018\/09\/05\/teacher-pay-slide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stagnation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in teacher salaries over a similar period; and schools of education that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urban.org\/features\/which-colleges-are-helping-create-diverse-teacher-workforce\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may not prioritize<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recruiting students of color.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For more, see <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/posts\/us\/2018\/11\/29\/teachers-of-color-diversity-public-school-trends-data\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/posts\/us\/2018\/11\/29\/teachers-of-color-diversity-public-school-trends-data\/<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently in Chalkbeat, Matt Barnum analyzed recent reports of teacher demographics and explained how the demographic make-up of the American teacher workforce can be understood in two different ways.
