He asks if parental satisfaction is really enough. Excerpts from the article appear below:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If parental satisfaction is all we&#8217;re after, it shouldn\u2019t be terribly hard to achieve. Polls find that most parents are already happy with their schools. The most recent<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/educationnext.org\/2017-ednext-poll-school-reform-public-opinion-school-choice-common-core-higher-ed\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Education Next<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for instance, finds that 62 percent of parents would give their own kid\u2019s present school a grade of A or B.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet a closer examination of America\u2019s educational outcomes indicates that our schools are<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/educationnext.org\/americas-mediocre-test-scores-education-poverty-crisis\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mediocre almost across the board<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The math and science skills of our affluent students are middling compared to affluent students in other countries; our children of college graduates do so-so compared to the children of college graduates elsewhere. Everyone talks about the achievement gap in America\u2014between rich and poor students, or white, black, and Latino kids. But there\u2019s another gap, between the lofty perceptions Americans have of their own children\u2019s schools and the objective truth, at least as measured by results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why so many parents, including affluent and well-educated ones, are satisfied with schools that provide mediocre outcomes is something of a mystery. Perhaps they want to believe their kids\u2019 schools are better than they actually are to avoid feeling guilty about paying for that kitchen renovation or new SUV instead of private-school tuition. Or perhaps they appreciate other forms of educational excellence\u2014strong sports programs, caring teachers, or engaging extracurricular activities\u2014that don\u2019t necessarily translate into improved test scores, higher graduation rates, and college success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So maybe parents don\u2019t prioritize measurable learning outcomes. But conservatives\u2014indeed all policymakers\u2014<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">should<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> prioritize them. It may be a clich\u00e9 to say that \u201cchildren are the future,\u201d but plenty of empirical evidence demonstrates that a well-educated citizenry is more likely to be wealthy and upwardly mobile.<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/educationnext.org\/education-and-economic-growth\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies by Hoover economist Eric Hanushek<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for instance, demonstrate a strong relationship between the cognitive ability of a nation\u2019s population and economic growth. He and his colleagues have<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/hanushek.stanford.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/publications\/Economic%20Gains%20from%20Educational%20Reform%20by%20US%20States.pdf\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">estimated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that bringing all states\u2019 performance up to the level of Minnesota and other top-performing states would result in an average increase of 9 percent in GDP over the next eight decades, creating trillions of dollars and easily solving America&#8217;s coming fiscal challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/hanushek.stanford.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/publications\/Hanushek%2BSchwerdt%2BWiederhold%2BWoessmann%202017%20EconLetters%20153_0.pdf\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies by Hanushek and his colleagues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might explain why. In the United States, the economic \u201creturn to skills\u201d\u2014the benefit to individuals in terms of higher pay based on what they know or can do\u2014is higher than in most other advanced nations. Because of our freer economy and lighter labor-market regulations, education really is what helps people get ahead. At this point, it should be clear to everyone that Americans with low skill levels are at grave risk of being left behind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Education is both a private good and a public good, and a society has a legitimate interest in the education of its next generation\u2014the more so when public dollars pay for it.
