Moreover, students of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all races<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were found to have more favorable perceptions of their teachers of color. It is also concerning that minority teachers are more likely than their white colleagues to change schools over a given period, and teacher turnover <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been linked<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to lower student test scores.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?f=001HNH_o5MvGoxfBqJli-UnuC_2UAA3PvTgNpeQlqJv-LanXmgunPheWIyIi-UsUzShp4ieQgPVY2Eop544SdB31s-646stmGRUFfFUe8TB1kq1eGExfBLSIGYZcf5EFaqldDSdQwPMTXjWhoBQ7byfuipAbWwnap70Uxc5pAK7_MUZvaXKZ5VXTN3SnFjp65Y35i7F61gj5Hw=&amp;c=bWo0pVWMSeD9vab4aYGww73HuoxGGBusQYEB7j261H_XOPLkH1WGlQ==&amp;ch=GfJZjqL6q4Lf_fHjeF0aUfedOMuSVgJ6gF_3ia-jtxjwe0dpj1a6BA==\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Brookings, Steven Bednar and Dora Gicheva strive to identify practices that are successful in retaining minority teachers, particularly in schools where they are underrepresented. Social identity theory and theories of isolation postulate that individuals are less content when they are part of a group in which they are a numerical minority. In other words, teachers are predictably more likely to seek employment elsewhere when there is a pronounced mismatch between their race or ethnicity and the racial or ethnic composition of the rest of the school&#8217;s staff. Since a supportive school administration<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?f=001HNH_o5MvGoxfBqJli-UnuC_2UAA3PvTgNpeQlqJv-LanXmgunPheWIyIi-UsUzShqwtVDCuZmIhsGmA9wU5txe4Rb9KZ6p0v5sOaIReMuB_lW51VclXZlUEV4mBS6yoacirA3eKDsoeHXJNHpAFx6IEk5nd4cwY1zkJryKdjOHgA9wOX4epCKUnRkw4IkNeYhr4YL_Je2v8Uykf5TObclINTZLPuN-vdkYwF2jf1IWo=&amp;c=bWo0pVWMSeD9vab4aYGww73HuoxGGBusQYEB7j261H_XOPLkH1WGlQ==&amp;ch=GfJZjqL6q4Lf_fHjeF0aUfedOMuSVgJ6gF_3ia-jtxjwe0dpj1a6BA==\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been shown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be one of the most important factors to boost retention for all teachers, the authors investigate whether having a supportive principal can be particularly helpful in making minority teachers in schools with few other minority teachers feel part of the group and less likely to leave.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They analyze four cycles of data from the large, nationally representative <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schools and Staffing Survey<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> administered by the National Center for Education Statistics in the Department of Education. The research focuses on teachers who stay in the profession, and examines the role of principal support in teachers&#8217; decisions to stay at their current school or move to a different school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The researchers confirm the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/puar.12435\/full\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">established result<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that once we account for other school characteristics such as size and composition of the student body, more administrative support\u2014both in absolute terms and relative to the school\u2019s average\u2014is associated with a lower likelihood of moving to a different school for teachers of any demographic background. In addition, they find that the relationship is especially pronounced for nonwhite or Hispanic teachers at schools where 10 percent or fewer of all teachers are also nonwhite or Hispanic.
