Within schools, leadership is most effective when it\u2019s distributed among a team of individuals with different skillsets and experiences but a shared mission to spark and sustain a school-wide culture of learning and improved outcomes for students. These types of instructional leadership teams can drive positive change throughout a school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the next few months, the Gates Foundation will be exploring distributed leadership and what it means for schools. To start, they have identified four key aspects of distributed leadership:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>1) Within a school, distributed leadership (DL) often takes the form of an instructional leadership team.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This team represents the larger school community, and each team member is involved because of their content and pedagogical expertise rather than their years of experience or formal leadership role in the school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>2) DL teams take on several important tasks in a school:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supporting the development of high-quality teaching by leading <\/span><b>content-specific, grade-level collaborative time<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engaging teachers <\/span><b>in cycles of observation, feedback, and reflection<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to adapt and refine their instruction to meet their students\u2019 needs;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teaching and modeling how to apply a <\/span><b>continuous improvement mindset<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to teaching, learning, and leading; <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tracking and monitoring <\/span><b>student level data<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to ensure school-wide student progress; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Providing other relevant <\/span><b>job-embedded professional learning supports<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>3) Principals and assistant principals are critical to enabling and sustaining the work of DL teams.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They do this by building the leadership capacity in the school and by creating the conditions where expertise can be spread across the school so that everyone can work individually and collectively to improve outcomes for students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>4) Distributed leadership is not about dividing tasks and responsibilities among individuals.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Instead, DL is concerned with the interactions among individuals (leaders and those whom they lead) to drive instructional improvement and improved student outcomes through the development of high-quality teaching and a culture where all students can thrive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visit the link below for more information and to follow the DL series on the Gates Foundation blog.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/k12education.gatesfoundation.org\/4-key-things-know-distributed-leadership\/?utm_source=momentum&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=newsletter-2017-may&amp;utm_content=4-key-things-to-know-about-distributed-leadership\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">http:\/\/k12education.gatesfoundation.org\/4-key-things-know-distributed-leadership\/<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Great leadership is at the heart of every high-quality public school.
