If implemented as intended, it will ensure that the expertise of the parents, educators and other leaders working with, and on behalf of, students every day informs the development of state and local policies and practices. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anne O\u2019Brien at Learning First Alliance highlights a number of resources that may be helpful in this endeavor:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learning First Alliance has issued<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.learningfirst.org\/stakeholder-engagement-required-essa\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guiding principles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help states and districts as they began this important work. See <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.learningfirst.org\/stakeholder-engagement-required-essa\">http:\/\/www.learningfirst.org\/stakeholder-engagement-required-essa<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Association of State Boards of Education recently released a related policy update. Drawn from reviews of 51 state education agency (SEA) websites and in-depth interviews with representatives from 15 SEAs,<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasbe.org\/policy-update\/essa-stakeholder-engagement-early-challenges-and-promising-practices\/\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ESSA Stakeholder Engagement: Early Challenges and Promising Practices<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> identifies five common challenges that states are facing in this work:<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identifying diverse stakeholders and casting a wider net<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overcoming time and resource constraints<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Communicating effectively with stakeholders<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maximizing meetings\u2019 impact<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organizing and incorporating feedback into a state plan<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasbe.org\/policy-update\/essa-stakeholder-engagement-early-challenges-and-promising-practices\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">http:\/\/www.nasbe.org\/policy-update\/essa-stakeholder-engagement-early-challenges-and-promising-practices\/<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> National PTA has identified the following best practices for engaging parents in ESSA:<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensure there is at least one dedicated parent representative on any ESSA state- or local-level committee<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Partner with PTA to:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disseminate information on ESSA and any meetings, forums or webinars<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Co-host ESSA-related forums<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leverage parent and community leaders to gather input from other parents and families in the community<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Show how parent input has been considered and\/or incorporated in state plans and policies<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask for specific input and feedback on topics and in parent-friendly language<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Build in structures and opportunities for ongoing engagement and feedback<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The association has also created a wide variety of resources accessible at<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pta.org\/essa\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PTA.org\/ESSA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to support states, districts and schools in engaging families in ESSA.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The stakeholder engagement provisions in ESSA (the Every Student Succeeds Act) will fundamentally alter how education policy is made.
