The waivers required states to adopt teacher evaluations that, among other requirements, were based in part on student performance data. The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) ends these federal requirements for teacher evaluations. The elimination of these requirements gives states the opportunity to take ownership of their own systems and refine what they already have in place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) has released a<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?f=001__JS4EfA4IFECdUOgJDKF8kgvSmV3oBM0_OOo35alRzanClCx4IKTmU3WmrQwHcJOSFfze6Rb22GPYRjXXTAquW8OQ1InRdgJKYMP7V9HV9MOipeftQnQuXinkMzfQ9bsu20Q3Co_2aoaWm-PDZ-VCt5PCAremKHZ7fscK6G7Bs7fhg74IM-MMC95JoRpAchLQIN8rQyfVVMYukB2HKgEL7KnFUDj1zmVfqgP-gDcEwfWoZj5CQ5Uda2XUirrjzm98pAhcyKStK5nmV_i0H1CgBmu5VIouiPkvvJIINht_o=&amp;c=LA6taWyOudiNTIIz8FkoAgdk5ql58twsCfvSn7oBUj8x4RlWsmvkXg==&amp;ch=cvwqbNlHiJ4EL-JHJuHYoH5aEJ74831YGZfPJWy8EhGr0JPEM5qWOg==\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">helpful set of principles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that states can use as a guide to designing, or refining, systems that support educators. These principles include the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Integrate teacher support and evaluation into broader efforts to develop teaching practice and improve student learning.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drive continuous improvement of teaching practice.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensure the system is fair, credible, and transparent.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CCSSO recommends that states assess their current teacher support and evaluation systems against these principles, and use them to refine their systems. These systems can advance student learning by providing teachers with meaningful feedback on their practice, and fostering teachers\u2019 professional growth and development.
