The language in the legislation names student engagement; educator engagement; access to and completion of advanced coursework; postsecondary readiness; school climate and safety as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">possible<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> categories from which non-academic measures might be selected, but it clearly specifies that states are not limited to these measures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">States are working hard to identify the measures they will use for the fifth indicator. But while states are converging on a few ideas, educators are all over the place in terms of what we call them. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lerner outlines a few common terms. I have added my own to this list:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.casel.org\/social-and-emotional-learning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/character.org\/key-topics\/what-is-character-education\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Character Education<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sas.upenn.edu\/~duckwort\/images\/Grit%20JPSP.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grit<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cte.ed.gov\/employabilityskills\/index.php\/framework\/applied_knowledge\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applied Knowledge<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cte.ed.gov\/employabilityskills\/index.php\/framework\/effective_relationships\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Effective Relationships<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cte.ed.gov\/employabilityskills\/index.php\/framework\/workplace_skills\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Workplace Skills<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.epi.org\/publication\/the-need-to-address-noncognitive-skills-in-the-education-policy-agenda\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-Cognitive Skills<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/novoresume.com\/career-blog\/soft-skills\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soft Skills<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.p21.org\/our-work\/p21-framework\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21st Century Learning<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/deeperlearning4all.org\/about-deeper-learning\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deeper Learning<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lerner asks, \u201cAre we all talking about the same thing?\u201d What differentiates these concepts from one another?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She writes:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While ESSA is clear on the inclusion of a non-academic indicator, it allows states the flexibility to choose whatever indicator and related measurement tool they best see fit. \u00a0Hence I think it is time to pull out my \u201clanguage police whistle\u201d and here are just a few reasons I am blowing it:<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The possibility of what could be considered a non-academic indicator is quite broad, so let\u2019s be clear about EXACTLY what we are talking about<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In defining a non-academic indicator, let\u2019s use clear language and terms that can be linked to measurable skills<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we are going to measure any of these skills, abilities, and dispositions as the non-academic indicator, then let\u2019s make sure we actually can and should be measuring them effectively and for the purpose of school and district-level accountability.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As states are working to develop their accountability systems and many national organizations are offering their thoughts and assistance to states, I expect our conversations to continue, but I hope we\u2019ll be more cognizant of our language and its use.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For more, see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aypf.org\/blog\/essas-non-academic-indicator-what-are-we-talking-about\/\">https:\/\/www.aypf.org\/blog\/essas-non-academic-indicator-what-are-we-talking-about\/<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the American Youth Policy Forum, \u00a0Jennifer Brown Lerner writes a thoughtful piece about the terminology that the education sector is using to refer to ESSA\u2019s fifth indicator, the \u201cnon-academic\u201d indicator.
