Merriam-Webster defines jargon as “the technical terminology or characteristic idiom of a special activity, group, profession, or field of study.”<\/span><\/p>\n

NPR Ed recently set out to define the most commonly used terms of education jargon in language regular people could understand, using<\/span> a text editor<\/span><\/a> that restricts you to the 1,000 most common words in the English language. Below are the results:<\/span><\/p>\n

Words School People Like To Use<\/b><\/h3>\n

Authentic (learning or assessment)<\/b><\/p>\n

What does this schoolwork have to do with my life or the real world?<\/span><\/p>\n

Best practices<\/b><\/p>\n

Let’s all do what the really good people do.<\/span><\/p>\n

Closing the achievement gap<\/b><\/p>\n

Some students don’t do as well as other students and we can fix it by working harder.<\/span><\/p>\n

College and career ready<\/b><\/p>\n

School should teach you how to learn and work.<\/span><\/p>\n

Competency-based education<\/b><\/p>\n

School should be about proving what you know, not just sitting in a chair for a number of weeks or years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Culturally responsive teaching<\/b><\/p>\n

Do you know where your students come from and what their lives are like?<\/span><\/p>\n

Data-driven<\/b><\/p>\n

We should decide things using numbers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Deeper learning<\/b><\/p>\n

Students should think hard, ask questions, and really work.<\/span><\/p>\n

Efficacy<\/b><\/p>\n

Is this thing working or not? Let’s find out.<\/span><\/p>\n

Grit<\/b><\/p>\n

People who try harder do better.<\/span><\/p>\n

Growth mindset<\/b><\/p>\n

You can do better if you believe you can do better if you try harder.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hybrid education<\/b><\/p>\n

Let’s use computers <\/span>and<\/span><\/i> people to teach students.<\/span><\/p>\n

Implement<\/b><\/p>\n

You have a good idea. Making it happen is the hard part.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mastery-based<\/b><\/p>\n

Don’t stop until you really know a thing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Microcredential<\/b><\/p>\n

You might not have to go to college for four years. You can learn good stuff even in just a few weeks, and you should be able to prove that.<\/span><\/p>\n

Personalization<\/b><\/p>\n

All students learn in their own way and their own time. Schools should help them. Maybe with computers?<\/span><\/p>\n

Pivot<\/b><\/p>\n

If your idea is not working, change it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Proficiency<\/b><\/p>\n

Good enough.<\/span><\/p>\n

Professional development<\/b><\/p>\n

Teach the teachers too.<\/span><\/p>\n

Project-based learning<\/b><\/p>\n

Don’t just write words and numbers. Do something.<\/span><\/p>\n

Scaffolding<\/b><\/p>\n
