An excerpt from their post appears below:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>It\u2019s long been touted that for students, having teachers that look like them leads to higher test scores. But that\u2019s not the whole story.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teachers of color are<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www2.ed.gov\/rschstat\/eval\/highered\/racial-diversity\/state-racial-diversity-workforce.pdf\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sorely underrepresented<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in America\u2019s public schools (USED, 2016). Despite the fact that a majority of students now belong to a minority group, only<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7 percent<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of America\u2019s teachers are African American, and only 8 percent of teachers are Hispanic. A vast majority &#8212; 82 percent &#8212; are white. As a result, students of color are<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">far less likely<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to encounter teachers who share similar backgrounds.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our new<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">working paper<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we use<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tripod surveys<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other recently collected data from the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/k12education.gatesfoundation.org\/teacher-supports\/teacher-development\/measuring-effective-teaching\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Measures of Effective Teaching project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to examine the effects of demographically similar teachers on a broad range of students\u2019 academic perceptions and attitudes related to their teachers. Because each teacher in our data is rated by multiple students, we can pinpoint differences in students\u2019 responses that are explained by race and gender interactions between students and teachers.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our results are striking. Across a number of different specifications, students who share racial and\/or gender characteristics with their teachers tend to report higher levels of personal effort, feeling cared for, student-teacher communication, academic engagement, and college aspirations. We observe the largest and most consistent effects when examining female students paired with female teachers, with particularly strong effects for black female students paired with black female teachers. We also find large effects for black male students assigned to black male teachers.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For black female students paired with black female teachers, we find significant benefits on eight of the 10 outcome scales we examine. These scales include items that measure whether students feel cared for, student\u2019s effort and aspirations, and teacher-student communication. We also find that black male students seem to particularly appreciate the classroom management techniques of male teachers. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The effect sizes we find are considerably larger than previous studies have found when examining test-score effects. Student achievement as measured through test scores is likely too narrow to sufficiently evaluate the dynamics of race\/ethnicity and gender interactions between teachers and students.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/scholar.harvard.edu\/files\/david_blazar\/files\/blazar_and_kraft_teacher_and_teaching_effects_on_students_academic_behaviors_and_mindsets_mathematica_working_paper_41.pdf?m=1449506784\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">growing literature<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Blazar &amp; Kraft, 2015) demonstrates that there are numerous<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teacher characteristics<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> beyond achievement on standardized tests that<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contribute<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to student success.
