These columns by teachers who decided\u00a0to leave teaching are often confessional, occasionally self-righteous. Some manage, bizarrely,\u00a0to\u00a0be both.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The proliferation of these pieces\u00a0indicts a system that drives out new, mid-career, and experienced teachers for all the wrong reasons. They\u00a0invariably make good points. If we&#8217;re going\u00a0to keep talented teachers, our profession does need more respect, higher pay, and policies that don&#8217;t seem like they were written by a troop of drunk monkeys on typewriters.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>But these gloomy tales of departure also demand an equal and opposite reaction: stories by teachers who have chosen\u00a0to\u00a0stay. Those of us who\u00a0plan\u00a0to\u00a0teach for the rest of our careers need\u00a0to\u00a0speak up about\u00a0why\u00a0we have made that choice.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>His three main reasons for staying are as follows:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The kids<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>The kids we teach can be hilarious. But they are also brave, brilliant, and wise. They come through the barriers\u00a0in\u00a0their lives\u2014hunger, homelessness, racism\u2014with courage and grace. I don&#8217;t see how we can demand less courage of ourselves than our students display on a daily basis.<\/em><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>The work<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>Teaching is a thought profession. The content might seem simple\u2014letter sounds and colors, shapes and math facts\u2014but the\u00a0interaction between a child&#8217;s mind and these concepts is fascinating and complex. Teachers bring a lot of heart\u00a0to\u00a0this work, but it demands an active mind,\u00a0too: reflection,\u00a0inquiry, and perpetual improvisation. You will never be bored.<\/em><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>The colleagues<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>The low pay, long hours, and absurd policies\u00a0took their\u00a0toll at times, but they couldn&#8217;t touch these career teachers&#8217; kindness\u00a0toward the students\u00a0in\u00a0their care.
