First. - Education First\" width=\"225\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a>As states work to finalize plans for the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) by the 2017-18 school year, Education First asks, what is your state\u2019s North Star and how can you use ESSA to help you chart a course to reach it? When a state has an education North Star \u2013 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a shared statewide vision and concrete set of goals that define what it means for each and every graduate to be prepared to succeed in careers, postsecondary education, and life<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 stakeholders from across the state are better able to collectively determine how to reach it. Designing an ESSA plan unique to your state can assist in charting the course to the education North Star \u2013 and making the necessary adjustments along the way to ensure that your students \u2013 particularly low-income students, English language learners, and students of color \u2013 are prepared for success in school and to achieve their dreams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Education First\u2019s new resource,<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1QShAN1\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making the Most of ESSA<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is designed to assist state and local education policymakers, funders, and advocates to take advantage of the tremendous opportunity ESSA represents. ESSA provides us with unprecedented flexibility, empowering us to select measures of academic, school and student success. We must maintain a fierce commitment to equity and excellence in every state and use this opportunity to have authentic statewide dialogues about what we want to accomplish together with and for our students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But we don\u2019t have a lot of time. \u00a0All state plans must be developed and approved by the U.S. Department of Education by the beginning of the 2017-18 school year. \u00a0That gives us all just a little over a year to have the tough but rewarding conversations about how we\u2019re going to ensure that all of our students have equal access to great teachers and leaders, that our standards and assessments are world-class, and that we\u2019re holding our schools accountable for student success in a way that makes sense for individual states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This important work has already begun in places all across the country: from Delaware\u2019s<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/visioncoalitionde.org\/news\/releasing-student-success-2025\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student Success 2025<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and vision to<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.k12.wa.us\/ESEA\/ESSA\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work groups in Washington State<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, from a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cde.state.co.us\/communications\/04052016essanewsrelease\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">listening tour in Colorado<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/education.ky.gov\/comm\/Pages\/Every-Student-Succeeds-Act-%28ESSA%29.aspx\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">town hall meetings in Kentucky<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to a new webpage dedicated to ESSA and newsletter updates for stakeholders in<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/education.ohio.gov\/Topics\/Every-Student-Succeeds-Act-ESSA\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ohio<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We encourage states to craft an ESSA plan that supports their North Star vision.
