the dangers of \u201ceducational protectionism\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At first blush, many listening to Education Secretary Arne Duncan\u2019s speech at the Microsoft Partners in Learning Global Forum may have thought they had accidentally stumbled into an economic forum.\u00a0 Duncan\u2019s speech was liberally sprinkled with many terms from the current economic rhetoric: \u201czero-sum game,\u201d \u201cinternational competition,\u201d and \u201cprotectionism.\u201d Words often used in debates over economic reforms and free trade agreements were instead used to highlight the attitudes that many have towards international collaboration in the public education sphere.<\/p>\n<p>Duncan urged attendees to harness the power of technology and collaboration to \u201celevate the teaching profession and accelerate achievement,\u201d as well as to \u201cresist the idea that international competition in education is a zero-sum game, in which one nation\u2019s advance is another nation\u2019s loss.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 While acknowledging that the current global economic system creates a vastly more competitive, even cutthroat, job market, \u201ceducational protectionism\u201d is not the answer.<\/p>\n<p>In support of these ideas, Duncan then announced that Microsoft\u2019s Partners in Learning (PiL) will be taking over the Department of Education\u2019s TEACH campaign, a program aimed to future teachers (particularly those in STEM, special education, and those of diverse heritage) and raise awareness of the value and importance of the profession.\u00a0 As the new owner and operator of the program, PiL will be responsible for maintaining the website, (teach.gov, which will move to teach.org), marketing the program, and \u201cimproving and expanding the teacher recruitment campaign.\u201d\u00a0 The Department\u2019s new role will be that of official partner in these efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Duncan covered many more topics during his speech, mainly focused on the potential positive impact of technology on education, citing examples from across the globe, and on the need for collaboration across countries, industries, and companies\u2014even those in direct competition.\u00a0 He lauded the \u201chealthy competition\u201d that Race to the Top and Investing in Innovation programs have encouraged, which are \u201cbeautiful illustration[s] of how healthy competition and collaboration go hand-in-hand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In closing, he again used economic terms to describe the needed changes in education.\u00a0 Rather than a future with \u201ccountries vying to get larger pieces of a finite economic pie for themselves\u2026expanding educational attainment everywhere is the best way to grow the pie for all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To read Secretary Duncan\u2019s full speech, please visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ed.gov\/news\/speeches\/secretary-arne-duncans-remarks-microsoft-partners-learning-global-forum\">http:\/\/www.ed.gov\/news\/speeches\/secretary-arne-duncans-remarks-microsoft-partners-learning-global-forum<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At first blush, many listening to Education Secretary Arne Duncan\u2019s speech at the Microsoft Partners in Learning Global Forum may have thought they had accidentally stumbled into an economic forum.\u00a0 Duncan\u2019s speech was liberally sprinkled with many terms from the current economic rhetoric: \u201czero-sum game,\u201d \u201cinternational competition,\u201d and \u201cprotectionism.\u201d Words often used in debates over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coreeducationllc.com\/blog2\/duncan-microsoft-will-take-over-teach-the-dangers-of-educational-protectionism\/\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"sr-only\">Read more about Duncan: Microsoft will take over TEACH;
