Education Week: November 13 \u2013 19"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>American Education Week (AEW) began in 1921 as a joint project between the National Education Association (NEA) and the American Legion.\u00a0 Ninety years later, the event still focuses on generating public support for education and \u201cinforming the public of the accomplishments and needs of the public schools and to secure the cooperation and support of the public in meeting those needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year the theme is \u201cGreat Public Schools: A Basic Right and Our Responsibility.\u201d\u00a0 The NEA invites the public to participate in AEW by bringing associated activities into their own communities.\u00a0 An electronic toolkit with materials and ideas has been provided for this purpose, and can be found at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nea.org\/grants\/34749.htm\">http:\/\/www.nea.org\/grants\/34749.htm<\/a>. \u00a0Each day of AEW has a specific focus:<\/p>\n<p>Monday, Nov. 14: <strong>Kick Off Day<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tuesday, Nov. 15:\u00a0 <strong>Parents Day<\/strong>\u2014parents are urged to visit their child\u2019s classroom to experience a\u00a0\u201cday in the life\u201d of their child and to encourage family engagement, an essential component\u00a0of student academic success.<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday, Nov. 16:\u00a0 <strong>Education Support Professionals Day<\/strong>\u2014a day to recognize and thank\u00a0those members of our schools\u2019 staff who often go unheralded but impact children\u2019s lives\u00a0each school day.\u00a0 On this day, be sure to thank school bus drivers, custodians, secretaries,\u00a0cooks, aids and all other professionals dedicated to the well-being of children in our schools.<\/p>\n<p>Thursday, Nov. 17:\u00a0 <strong>Educator for a Day<\/strong>\u2014allows community members to walk in the shoes of an educator, undertaking all the duties associated with the profession.\u00a0 The goal is to enhance understanding among educators and community leaders by highlighting the successes and challenges teachers face each day.<\/p>\n<p>Friday, Nov. 18:\u00a0 <strong>Substitute Educators Day<\/strong>\u2014This day seeks to increase respect for substitute\u00a0educators and advocate for issues affecting these professionals: that all substitutes receive\u00a0wage and help benefits for those who work most of the year and are provided with genuine,\u00a0continual professional development opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>The American Legion is encouraging all of its posts to support AEW in a variety of ways (see their brochure at <a href=\"http:\/\/legion.org\/documents\/legion\/pdf\/american_education_week_booklet.pdf\">http:\/\/legion.org\/documents\/legion\/pdf\/american_education_week_booklet.pdf<\/a>), but there is a particular focus on getting the word out through activities that involve showcasing student accomplishments or creative works, which in turn engages their families and the community at
