{"id":592,"date":"2011-10-25T18:34:15","date_gmt":"2011-10-25T22:34:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/coreeducationllc.com\/blog2\/?p=592"},"modified":"2012-04-26T13:14:36","modified_gmt":"2012-04-26T17:14:36","slug":"teachers-of-the-year-discuss-public-perception-of-teachers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coreeducationllc.com\/blog2\/teachers-of-the-year-discuss-public-perception-of-teachers\/","title":{"rendered":"Teachers of the Year Discuss Public Perception of Teachers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We have all heard the polls\u2014while most people think their local\/neighborhood school is great, they have a poor opinion of other schools across their states and the nation. \u00a0Recently, a group of past and present state Teachers of the Year took part in a three-day intensive discussion about the public perception of the teaching profession and how teachers can change the rhetoric.\u00a0 The discussion, held on the NTOY Network, and online community of the Teacher Leaders Network, offered several suggestions for what teachers can do to change the public perception of teaching:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Teach.<\/strong>\u00a0 Great teachers are constantly challenging their students to dig deeper to come to well-informed conclusions.\u00a0 This skill must be turned upon the community.\u00a0 \u201cWe must become public engagement experts, advocating for our schools, students and profession.\u00a0 Rather than talking \u2018at\u2019 the public, we must actively involve community members in honest discussions\u2026and let them help shape the educational landscape as partners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Open our classroom doors.<\/strong>\u00a0 Web 2.0 technologies have significant power to let the \u201coutside\u201d into our classrooms.\u00a0 Social media, blogs, and live classroom feeds can help transparency, while responding to comments and messages can help \u201cbegin authentic discussions.\u201d\u00a0 Face-to-face interactions, through service learning projects, community and family partnerships and events, are also extremely important for forwarding the community involvement process.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Help reporters to identify great stories\u2014and why these stories are significant.<\/strong>\u00a0 We must partner with the media to help us reach and teach a larger audience.\u00a0 \u201cWe teachers have long been accustomed to an egalitarian culture in our profession where no one teacher stands out too much.\u00a0 For this reason, we rarely highlight what our most effective colleagues are doing in the classroom\u2014and we certainly don\u2019t want to appear to brag about our own efforts\u2026it\u2019s time to get over that.\u201d\u00a0 The news need not be earth-shattering, but should be framed in a way that explains why the story matters in a local and national context.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Advocate for improved accountability systems.<\/strong>\u00a0 The taxpaying public has a right to hold us accountable for our work.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 \u201cBecause, regardless of their field, professionals strive to improve the outcomes for those they serve.\u201d\u00a0 Also, by being part of the conversation of how best to evaluate teachers, we can advocate for methods that are research- and best practices-based, and grounded in classroom realities.<\/p>\n<p>The discussion wrapped up with a call to action to take on the tough tasks that are facing the teaching profession:<\/p>\n<p><em>We hope you\u2014our fellow teachers\u2014are willing to take on the tough tasks. To build relationships with community members and the media. To tell engaging stories and explain why they matter. To gather and share evidence of the work you do, and advocate for changes to transform your (our!) profession. These tasks define the profession of teaching, so in other words, we hope that you teach.
