{"id":582,"date":"2011-10-18T18:27:10","date_gmt":"2011-10-18T22:27:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/coreeducationllc.com\/blog2\/?p=582"},"modified":"2012-04-26T13:20:02","modified_gmt":"2012-04-26T17:20:02","slug":"teacher-evaluations-for-non-tested-subjects-slos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coreeducationllc.com\/blog2\/teacher-evaluations-for-non-tested-subjects-slos\/","title":{"rendered":"Teacher Evaluations for Non-Tested Subjects: SLOs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The continuing discussion on teacher evaluations has led many to ask how to go about evaluating teachers in non-tested subjects.\u00a0 Some states have chosen to instead rely heavily on classroom observations; however, a new strategy has evolved that would include a \u201cstudent learning objectives\u201d (SLO) component.<\/p>\n<p>SLOs are \u201ccarefully planned goals for what a student will learn over a given time period\u2026SLOs introduce a very precise process intended to evoke critical, evidence-based thought about a teacher\u2019s students.\u201d\u00a0 This tool was developed in Denver as part of their compensation system reform.\u00a0 The Community Training and Assistance Center (CTAC) conducted a four-year study of Denver\u2019s reform, and has provided technical support to other districts\u2014most notably Charlotte-Mecklenburg District, which just received the 2011 Broad Prize.<\/p>\n<p>These objectives are set by teachers following three steps:<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Review the data available about their students early in the year, including prior year \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 performances and any pre-tests administered;<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Set a designated number of objectives (usually two: classroom-wide and targeted);<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Identify appropriate measurements.<\/p>\n<p>Principals are responsible for validating the attainment of the objectives, which then leads to a teacher performance rating (or extra compensation, depending on the system).\u00a0 CTAC\u2019s studies of SLOs indicate that the tool has promise, particularly in that it seems to connect teacher evaluations to student learning \u201cwhile respecting teacher professionalism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To read more about SLOs, please visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ctacusa.com\/slos.html\">http:\/\/www.ctacusa.com\/slos.html<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The continuing discussion on teacher evaluations has led many to ask how to go about evaluating teachers in non-tested subjects.\u00a0 Some states have chosen to instead rely heavily on classroom observations; however, a new strategy has evolved that would include a \u201cstudent learning objectives\u201d (SLO) component.
