{"id":569,"date":"2011-10-10T18:10:47","date_gmt":"2011-10-10T22:10:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/coreeducationllc.com\/blog2\/?p=569"},"modified":"2012-04-26T13:24:21","modified_gmt":"2012-04-26T17:24:21","slug":"teacher-induction-gets-renewed-attention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coreeducationllc.com\/blog2\/teacher-induction-gets-renewed-attention\/","title":{"rendered":"Teacher Induction Gets Renewed Attention"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At a conference sponsored by the Alliance for Excellent Education on October 4, advocates for robust new-teacher support systems gathered to change the current discourse \u201cfrom evaluation to induction.\u201d\u00a0 Richard Ingersoll, professor in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania, spoke about an analysis he released last year of the National Center for Education Statistics\u2019 2007-08 School and Staffing Survey.\u00a0 His data showed that the teaching force \u201chas been ballooning in size over the past couple of decades\u2026the growth is outstripping the growth of students by two and a half times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a result, there has been a lot of hiring, and many of those new hires are novice teachers\u2014what he calls the \u201cgreening\u201d of the teaching force.\u00a0 Ingersoll said \u00a0that 81% of new teachers have mentors, but only just over half actively collaborate with colleagues, and rarely do they get a reduced course-load their first year\u2014something that is common for professors at the college level.<\/p>\n<p>He discussed his 2004 analysis of the 1999-2000 SASS figures showing that attrition rates differ based on the types of induction services teachers receive.\u00a0 Those who receive little or no induction have a 21% attrition rate after the first year; of those who receive \u201ccomprehensive\u201d services (about 2% of teachers overall), only 9% leave after their first year.<\/p>\n<p>Ellen Moir, CEO of the New Teacher Center, spoke later in the day and agreed that teacher education programs on their own \u201care not really preparing new teachers for what it\u2019s like to be in an urban setting\u2026what they\u2019re offering is a simulated experience.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Gwendolyn Benson, associate dean in the College of Education at the University of Georgia, added that teacher education programs can help reduce attrition by implementing strong induction programs.<\/p>\n<p>Though value-added measurement of teachers was not specifically addressed, the discussions during the conference seemed partly driven by concern that with so much attention being paid to teacher evaluation, teacher induction could become overshadowed.\u00a0 \u201cThe bad news is that there\u2019s too much dialogue about getting rid of lousy teachers and not enough on how to develop the teachers we have,\u201d said Moir.\u00a0 It was the only statement that morning followed by applause from the 60-person audience.<\/p>\n<p>To read more, please visit <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edweek.org\/teachers\/teaching_now\/2011\/10\/teacher_induction_advocates_extol_teacher_induction.html\">http:\/\/blogs.edweek.org\/teachers\/teaching_now\/2011\/10\/teacher_induction_advocates_extol_teacher_induction.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p>To view the entire panel discussion, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/media.all4ed.org\/briefing-oct-4-2011\">http:\/\/media.all4ed.org\/briefing-oct-4-2011<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>**Core Education, LLC is pleased to offer induction program design and services to states and districts.
