{"id":567,"date":"2011-10-09T18:09:45","date_gmt":"2011-10-09T22:09:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/coreeducationllc.com\/blog2\/?p=567"},"modified":"2012-04-26T13:25:20","modified_gmt":"2012-04-26T17:25:20","slug":"education-technology-after-the-investment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coreeducationllc.com\/blog2\/education-technology-after-the-investment\/","title":{"rendered":"Education Technology: After the Investment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jack Schneider, postdoctoral fellow for innovation in the liberal arts at Carleton College, recently blogged for <em>Education Week\u2019s <\/em>\u201cTeaching Now\u201d blog on the \u201cmania\u201d for educational technology.\u00a0 He touches on the apparent consensus that the solution to the nation\u2019s education problem is new technologies: smartboards in every classroom, iPads for each student, and collaborative projects like wikis and blogs across the curriculum.\u00a0 Governments, foundations and schools are pouring buckets of money into educational technology projects to help boost American students\u2019 achievement.\u00a0 However, new research suggests a problem:\u00a0 it\u2019s not working.<\/p>\n<p>A recent front-page article in <em>The New York Times<\/em> details the efforts of the Kyrene school district in Tempe, Arizona to boost achievement through huge investments in technology.\u00a0 Since 2005, the district has invested $33 million in technology through hiking property taxes, but rather than seeing a jump in student performance, test scores in reading and math have stagnated.\u00a0 The district\u2019s response?\u00a0 A new ballot initiative to get new taxes to pay for more technology.<\/p>\n<p>Schneider cites the large investments of private foundations and local businesses that have contributed to the craze.\u00a0\u00a0 They invest tens of millions of dollars in educational technology projects regularly, yet stories similar to Kyrene\u2019s are happening all over the country.\u00a0 Even Tom Vander Ark, formerly of the Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation, admits that the research linking educational technology to academic achievement is weak. \u201cIt\u2019s very difficult when we\u2019re pressed to come up with convincing data,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Schneider asserts that the discrepancy between perceptions and reality, though, require some investigation.\u00a0 It is easy to walk into a thriving classroom where all children have a tablet computer and believe that the technology is driving the achievement.\u00a0 However, one has to remember that schools with such technology available are generally well-resourced with lots of other factors in its favor.\u00a0 Straining out what makes the school a success is more difficult than simply pinpointing one particular aspect.<\/p>\n<p>However, this does not mean that we should give up on educational technology.\u00a0 Any tool, including technology, is only as effective as the person wielding it.\u00a0 So rather than throwing in the towel, districts should begin to look closely at what comes <em>after the investment<\/em>.\u00a0 Is the technology being used appropriately to enhance learning and instruction, or simply as a flashy addition to otherwise ineffective techniques?\u00a0 Comprehensive training and professional development opportunities should be considered a crucial component to any educational technology investment, and teachers should be given ample opportunities to subsequently \u201cbrush up\u201d their tech know-how through additional training and support.<\/p>\n<p>As Schneider concludes, there is an \u201curgency of working toward school improvement.\u00a0 We can\u2019t wait. ..But we also can\u2019t afford to get it wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To read more, please visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edweek.org\/ew\/articles\/2011\/10\/05\/06schneider_ep.h31.html?tkn=TNQFmh%2BMkb0Pb2v3nlm%2FYYp7B7DFlQ%2BiXYia&amp;cmp=ENL-EU-VIEWS1\">http:\/\/www.edweek.org\/ew\/articles\/2011\/10\/05\/06schneider_ep.h31.html?tkn=TNQFmh%2BMkb0Pb2v3nlm%2FYYp7B7DFlQ%2BiXYia&amp;cmp=ENL-EU-VIEWS1<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>**Core Education, LLC is dedicated to teacher effectiveness, including the design of teacher professional development for instructional technology.
