{"id":4687,"date":"2014-10-08T08:00:17","date_gmt":"2014-10-08T12:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.coreeducationllc.com\/blog2\/?p=4687"},"modified":"2020-03-03T17:43:25","modified_gmt":"2020-03-03T21:43:25","slug":"new-toolkit-helps-educators-engage-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coreeducationllc.com\/blog2\/new-toolkit-helps-educators-engage-students\/","title":{"rendered":"New Toolkit Helps Educators Engage Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coreeducationllc.com\/blog2\/the-talent-teacher-initiative-early-impacts\/ies\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-194\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-194\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.coreeducationllc.com\/blog2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IES.png?resize=224%2C51\" alt=\"IES\" width=\"224\" height=\"51\" \/><\/a>A new toolkit from REL West at WestEd helps educators productively engage students in school improvement efforts, including generating and analyzing data.<\/strong> The <em><a href=\"http:\/\/ies.ed.gov\/ncee\/edlabs\/projects\/project.asp?projectID=438\">Speak Out, Listen Up!<\/a><\/em> toolkit offers strategies for eliciting student voice, or perspective, about education challenges \u2014 a perspective that is beneficial in rethinking policies and practices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The toolkit provides instructions and materials for three data-related activities.<\/strong> One tool leads students to analyze and interpret local data; a second tool organizes a \u201cfishbowl\u201d through which students and educators trade roles as speakers and listeners while grappling with a topic of mutual concern; and the third tool guides students to create a \u201cdigital story\u201d that presents the challenges they face and what they think they need from educators in order to be successful. Each tool generates student ideas for solutions to local school challenges.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nevada\u2019s Washoe County School District partnered with REL West to develop the toolkit and has been using it to draw out student perspectives on a number of district challenges,<\/strong> among them high school dropout. For example, returning dropouts produced a video that describes firsthand accounts of why students quit school and what is needed for them to return and earn a diploma.
