{"id":456,"date":"2011-07-26T19:51:28","date_gmt":"2011-07-26T23:51:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/coreeducationllc.com\/blog2\/?p=456"},"modified":"2012-04-26T20:29:04","modified_gmt":"2012-04-27T00:29:04","slug":"fellowship-program-aims-to-change-teacher-prep","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coreeducationllc.com\/blog2\/fellowship-program-aims-to-change-teacher-prep\/","title":{"rendered":"Fellowship Program Aims to Change Teacher Prep"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 2007, Indiana adopted a new teaching fellowship program, established by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, to recruit professionals with STEM expertise.\u00a0 Fellows, whether mid-career or fresh out of college, were set to work in secondary schools serving disadvantaged populations.\u00a0 The program seeks to not only address the shortage of STEM teachers, but to change university-based teacher preparation to resemble the residency-type training doctors receive.<\/p>\n<p>Michigan and Ohio adopted the fellowship programs this year, announcing the first sets of fellows this spring.\u00a0 Each participant earns a teaching certificate and a master\u2019s degree and receives a $30,000 scholarship.\u00a0 In return, fellows commit to teaching for three years in a high-needs school (schools with a significant percentage of students at risk of academic failure).<\/p>\n<p>Fellows typically work in schools several days a week for a full academic year with increasing teaching duties as the year progresses.\u00a0 A benefit of this set-up, says fellow Jeremy Sebens, is that \u201cyou could take the theory you\u2019re learning and apply it the very next day and come back and say, \u2018Hey this worked great,\u2019 or \u2018It didn\u2019t work at all.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 Another fellow, Hwa Y.
