{"id":447,"date":"2011-07-20T19:45:50","date_gmt":"2011-07-20T23:45:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/coreeducationllc.com\/blog2\/?p=447"},"modified":"2012-04-26T20:21:59","modified_gmt":"2012-04-27T00:21:59","slug":"nea-shifts-position-on-teacher-evaluations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coreeducationllc.com\/blog2\/nea-shifts-position-on-teacher-evaluations\/","title":{"rendered":"NEA Shifts Position on Teacher Evaluations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently the nation\u2019s largest teachers\u2019 union, the National Education Association, changed their position on including student performance in teacher evaluations.\u00a0 In passing the new policy, the union hopes to take a leadership role in the national movement towards revamped teacher evaluation methods.<\/p>\n<p>However, the union also made it clear that it continues to oppose the use of existing standardized test scores to judge teachers, a core component of many teacher evaluation overhauls across the country.\u00a0 \u201cN.E.A. is and always will be opposed to high-stakes, test-driven evaluations,\u201d said Becky Pringle, secretary-treasurer of the union.<\/p>\n<p>NEA\u2019s stance exemplifies the delicate situation now faced by the nation amid budget crises and attempts to curtail collective bargaining rights in several states.\u00a0 The union is now focused on closing ranks and encouraging members, even those outraged by the current situation, to embrace calls for change\u2014on their own terms.<\/p>\n<p>The union also made early moves to decide whom to support during 2012\u2019s presidential election.\u00a0 In spite of the union\u2019s anger at the Obama administration\u2019s promotion of charter schools and high-stakes testing, the assembly voted by secret ballot to give President Obama an early endorsement for his re-election run.\u00a0 The endorsement did not come without doubts, however, and has left many questions on the new direction of the NEA.<\/p>\n<p>To read the full story, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/07\/05\/us\/05teachers.html?_r=1\">http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/07\/05\/us\/05teachers.html?_r=1<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently the nation\u2019s largest teachers\u2019 union, the National Education Association, changed their position on including student performance in teacher evaluations.\u00a0 In passing the new policy, the union hopes to take a leadership role in the national movement towards revamped teacher evaluation methods.
