Increasingly, teachers are able to participate in online and hybrid PLCs in addition to PLCs that meet face-to-face.<\/p>\n<p>A new report from the <a href=\"http:\/\/ies.ed.gov\/ncee\/edlabs\/regions\/midatlantic\/index.asp\">Mid-Atlantic Regional Educational Laboratory<\/a> for the <a href=\"http:\/\/ies.ed.gov\/\">Institute of Educational Sciences<\/a> examines:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Characteristics of PLCs, as reported in the literature<\/li>\n<li>Advantages and challenges of online and hybrid PLCs, compared to face-to-face PLCs<\/li>\n<li>Considerations for the design and setup of online and hybrid PLCs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are some of the results of the findings:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do online PLC\u2019s work?\n<ul>\n<li>Yes, \u201cthe literature finds that teachers who collaborate online are engaged with the group, develop a sense of community, improve their knowledge of subject and pedagogical content, and intend to modify their instructional practices accordingly.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>What are the advantages of online PLC\u2019s?\n<ul>\n<li>Flexibility<\/li>\n<li>Timeliness<\/li>\n<li>Comprehensiveness<\/li>\n<li>Encouragement of self-reflection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>What are the disadvantages of online PLC\u2019s?\n<ul>\n<li>Teachers do show less motivation to participate than face-to-face PLC\u2019s.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>What practices do the literature suggest are best practices?\n<ul>\n<li>structuring collaboration<\/li>\n<li>allowing participants to shape the goals, structure, and assessment of the collaboration<\/li>\n<li>pairing experts with less experienced learners<\/li>\n<li>designing activities that promote self-reflection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The paper concludes that while there are some preliminary positives about online PLC\u2019s, educators\u2019 thinking about online PLC\u2019s has not moved beyond the scope of traditional PLC\u2019s.
