{"id":3324,"date":"2013-07-25T08:41:25","date_gmt":"2013-07-25T12:41:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.coreeducationllc.com\/blog2\/?p=3324"},"modified":"2020-09-12T16:47:28","modified_gmt":"2020-09-12T20:47:28","slug":"montgomery-county-md-measuring-hope-to-help-improve-academic-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coreeducationllc.com\/blog2\/montgomery-county-md-measuring-hope-to-help-improve-academic-success\/","title":{"rendered":"Montgomery County (MD) Measuring \u2018Hope\u2019 to Help Improve Academic Success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Montgomery County Public Schools, MD, will greet its students this fall with a survey that asks them questions, not about academics, but about \u201chope, engagement and well-being.\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org\/\">MCPS<\/a> is teaming up with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/home.aspx\">Gallup<\/a>, the polling giant, to conduct this survey, which they also conducted last year. For three years of work that includes working with teachers and staff to understand the survey results, MCPS is paying Gallup a whopping $900,000 in hopes that students in schools that put emphasis on their social and emotional lives also perform better academically, as some research studies have shown.<\/p>\n<p>While some, like rising senior Andrew Zhang at Richard Montgomery High School, question whether a survey can truly measure such subjective measures as \u201chope, engagement and well-being,\u201d MCPS Superintendent Joshua Starr is enthusiastic about the plan: \u201cWe\u2019re taking a holistic view of what school performance looks like. Rather than just saying it\u2019s just about student achievement results, we\u2019re saying it is also about how you get student achievement results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Questions will include whether students \u201cenergetically pursue goals,\u201d \u201claughed or smiled a lot yesterday,\u201d \u201chave a best friend at school,\u201d and \u201c[have] an adult in my life who cares about my future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MCPS is not alone in this holistic focus on students. \u201cIn Minnesota, the nonprofit EdVisions Schools has been administering a \u2018Hope Survey\u2019 since 2007. Research on affiliated schools\u2019 practices has found that increasing hope among students has resulted in gains in math and other test scores. In Texas, staff coaches are training teachers in Austin to help students \u2018manage emotions and behaviors to achieve goals\u2019 in an effort to nurture \u2018the whole child.\u2019 And in Illinois, state legislators passed the Children\u2019s Mental Health Act of 2003, requiring schools to teach students how to better manage their emotions and behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most of the concern with the study centers on whether the school system will continue to emphasize academics.
