{"id":2921,"date":"2013-04-23T12:30:32","date_gmt":"2013-04-23T16:30:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.coreeducationllc.com\/blog2\/?p=2921"},"modified":"2013-04-23T12:30:32","modified_gmt":"2013-04-23T16:30:32","slug":"bill-gates-on-teacher-evaluations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coreeducationllc.com\/blog2\/bill-gates-on-teacher-evaluations\/","title":{"rendered":"Bill Gates on Teacher Evaluations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coreeducationllc.com\/blog2\/bill-gates-on-teacher-evaluations\/med_gatesfoundation\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2922\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2922\" alt=\"med_gatesfoundation\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.coreeducationllc.com\/blog2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/med_gatesfoundation.jpg?resize=290%2C186\" width=\"290\" height=\"186\" \/><\/a>Through the influence of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gatesfoundation.org\/What-We-Do\/US-Program\/College-Ready-Education\">Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation<\/a>, which has provided money for many different educational studies in recent years, Bill Gates has become an influential name\u00a0 in education.<\/p>\n<p>It might be expected that Gates would support educational reforms more along the lines of the privatization-corporatization model as well as support reforms that involve technology, and that may be generally true, but in a recent op-ed piece in the Washington Post, Gates calls for balanced teacher evaluations that incorporate factors beyond simply student test scores.<\/p>\n<p>Gates first highlights what he sees as an over-zealous attitude by some states to develop standardized tests. For example, he mentions how \u201cin <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edexcellence.net\/commentary\/education-gadfly-daily\/ohio-gadfly-daily\/2013\/teacher-evaluation-overkill-in-ohio-what-about-pe-teachers.html\">one Midwestern state<\/a>, for example, a 166-page <a href=\"http:\/\/education.ohio.gov\/GD\/Templates\/Pages\/ODE\/ODEDetail.aspx?page=3&amp;TopicRelationID=1793&amp;ContentID=132131&amp;Content=139137\">Physical Education Evaluation Instrument<\/a> holds teachers accountable for <a href=\"http:\/\/education.ohio.gov\/GD\/DocumentManagement\/DocumentDownload.aspx?DocumentID=133761\">ensuring that students meet state-defined targets for physical education<\/a>, such as consistently demonstrating \u2018correct skipping technique with a smooth and effortless rhythm\u2019 and \u2018strike consistently a ball with a paddle to a target area with accuracy and good technique.\u2019 I\u2019m not making this up!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gates believes it is this over-zealous approach to standardized testing that has engendered the backlash against it: \u201cThis is one reason there is a backlash against standardized tests \u2014 in particular, using student test scores as the primary basis for making decisions about firing, promoting and compensating teachers. I\u2019m all for accountability, but I understand teachers\u2019 concerns and frustrations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In summary, Gates wants a teacher evaluation system that incorporates multiple measures, including standardized tests, and that actually helps teachers know how to make improvements. Gates predicts that teachers will be more supportive of such initiatives: \u201cIf we aren\u2019t careful to build a system that provides feedback and that teachers trust, this opportunity to dramatically improve the U.S. education system will be wasted. The fact is, teachers <em>want<\/em> to be accountable to their students.
