{"id":25,"date":"2012-04-04T17:14:18","date_gmt":"2012-04-04T21:14:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/coreeducationllc.com\/blog2\/?p=25"},"modified":"2020-09-12T17:57:07","modified_gmt":"2020-09-12T21:57:07","slug":"truant-from-school-history-science-and-art-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coreeducationllc.com\/blog2\/truant-from-school-history-science-and-art-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Truant from School: History, Science and Art"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last month, Common Core.org hosted a panel discussion that focused on those subjects <em>not <\/em>included in the Common Core State Standards: history, science, and the arts.\u00a0 Panelists included David Coleman, lead writer of the CCSS in English Language Arts; Lynn Munson, President and Executive Director of Common Core; Lewis Huffman, Education Associate for Social Studies at the South Carolina DOE; and Carol Jago, Director of the California Reading and Literature Project at UCLA.<\/p>\n<p>Among the topics discussed were the results of Common Core\u2019s national survey, <em>Learning Less<\/em>, as well as the announcement that Common Core will be creating CCSS-based curriculum maps in history and geography.\u00a0 <em>Learning Less<\/em> was a national survey of 1,001 3<sup>rd<\/sup>-12<sup>th<\/sup> grade public school teachers to gather data about teacher behavior and classroom practice.\u00a0 The results of the survey are not surprising to classroom teachers:<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;66% of teacher say that math and language arts are \u201ccrowd[ing] out\u201d other subjects, such as art, music, foreign language, and social studies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;77% of teachers who believe the statement above say that this is the case across the full student body, regardless of individual students\u2019 academic achievement.\u00a0 Only 21% believe the \u201ccrowding out\u201d is targeted towards struggling students.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;51% of elementary school teachers say that students who are pulled out for extra help in math or language arts, the most likely subjects they will be pulled out during are social studies (48%) and science (40%).<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;93% of teachers who believe crowding out is taking place believe that this is largely driven by state tests.\u00a0 Additionally, 80% report that \u201cmore and more\u201d of the time they should be spending on teaching is spent on paperwork and reporting requirements to meet state standards.<\/p>\n<p>These results and others were discussed during the panel, with each panelists weighing in from their unique professional experiences.\u00a0 \u201c71% of high school teachers surveyed said that students will have read the Constitution by the time they graduate. \u00a0My question is, but will they understand it? \u00a0Another statistic, 92% of those teachers said students will know who fought whom in WWII. My question: \u00a0But will they know why? \u00a0And I think those are critical things,\u201d said Lewis Huffman.<\/p>\n<p>Taking the conversation in another direction, David Coleman reflected on the current focus across states and districts on ELA.\u00a0 \u201cThere is no such thing as doing the nuts and bolts of reading in Kindergarten through 5<sup>th<\/sup> grade without coherently developing knowledge in science, and history, and the arts.\u00a0 Period.\u00a0 It is false.\u00a0 It is a fiction.\u00a0 And that is why NAEP scores \u2026collapse as students grow older.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Piggybacking off this train of thought, Carol Jago added her view as a veteran classroom teacher.\u00a0 \u201cThe students who find themselves most often in the classes that are literature lite [and] reading lite, are those students who are most disengaged from school.\u00a0 So what are they experiencing?\u00a0 They experience a content-free curriculum\u2026And so it reaffirms these students\u2019 belief that school is about nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lynne Munson rounded off the conversation by announcing that Common Core will be creating a series of curriculum maps for history and geography.\u00a0 \u201cThese maps will be based on content drawn from the best existing state social studies standards and they will address the new CCSS literacy standards in history and social studies&#8230;These new maps are another concrete step CC is taking toward addressing the problem of curriculum narrowing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To read the results of the <em>Learning Less<\/em> survey, please visit <a href=\"http:\/\/commoncore.org\/ourreports.php\">http:\/\/commoncore.org\/ourreports.php<\/a><\/p>\n<p>To read view a recording of the <em>Truant From School <\/em>discussion, please visit <a href=\"http:\/\/commoncore.org\/index.php\">http:\/\/commoncore.org\/index.php<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last month, Common Core.org hosted a panel discussion that focused on those subjects not included in the Common Core State Standards: history, science, and the arts.\u00a0 Panelists included David Coleman, lead writer of the CCSS in English Language Arts;
