{"id":1781,"date":"2012-08-07T20:42:11","date_gmt":"2012-08-08T00:42:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/coreeducationllc.com\/blog2\/?p=1781"},"modified":"2012-08-07T20:42:11","modified_gmt":"2012-08-08T00:42:11","slug":"how-to-build-a-better-teacher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coreeducationllc.com\/blog2\/how-to-build-a-better-teacher\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Build a Better Teacher"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/coreeducationllc.com\/blog2\/how-to-build-a-better-teacher\/slate-magazine\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1782\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-1782\" title=\"slate-magazine\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/coreeducationllc.com\/blog2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/slate-magazine.png?resize=167%2C75\" alt=\"\" width=\"167\" height=\"75\" \/><\/a>In a recent article for <em>Slate,<\/em> Ryan Fisman reflects on the current emphasis on teacher effectiveness.\u00a0 Is firing bad instructors the only way to improve schools?\u00a0 According to new research, maybe not.\u00a0 Few districts have the \u201cluxury\u201d of being able to fire low-performing teachers and replacing them with more effective ones.<\/p>\n<p>This being the case, how else can schools be improved?\u00a0 According to new studies from psychologists, economists, and educators, it may be possible to improve low-performing teachers, rather than firing them.\u00a0 \u201cIf these studies can be replicated throughout entire school systems and across the country, we may be at the beginning of a revolution that will build a better educational system for America,\u201d writes Fisman.<\/p>\n<p>For example, Cincinnati\u2019s teacher evaluation system (<a href=\"http:\/\/coreeducationllc.com\/blog2\/evaluating-teacher-effectiveness-the-cincinnati-model\/\">discussed here<\/a>) focuses on meaningful feedback and coaching as part of teacher evaluations and was phased in gradually.\u00a0 These methods hold promise for improving teacher quality; teacher performance, rather than jumping for a year or two and then settling back to its original level, has been on the increase since implementation in 2000.\u00a0 And the expense of \u201ccreating\u201d a better teacher is fairly modest\u2014about $7,000 per teacher.<\/p>\n<p>Another recent study from the National Bureau of Economic Research focused on \u201closs aversion\u201d and how it might affect teacher performance.\u00a0 Rather than paying for performance, the study involved giving teachers an upfront bonus, with the understanding that some (or all) would have to be paid back if their students failed to meet performance targets.\u00a0 The authors believe the \u201closs incentive\u201d was extremely motivating, enough to transfer a bad teacher into a mediocre one, or to make average teachers excellent.<\/p>\n<p>Fisman realizes it is unlikely that a \u201cpedagogical silver bullet that makes a great teacher\u201d will ever be found (despite the large sums being spent to discover it).\u00a0 However, it may be possible to find individual interventions that \u201cdo have outsized effects on student learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To read the full article, please visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/business\/the_dismal_science\/2012\/07\/how_to_improve_teaching_new_evidence_that_poor_teachers_can_learn_to_be_good_ones_.html\">http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/business\/the_dismal_science\/2012\/07\/how_to_improve_teaching_new_evidence_that_poor_teachers_can_learn_to_be_good_ones_.html<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a recent article for Slate, Ryan Fisman reflects on the current emphasis on teacher effectiveness.\u00a0 Is firing bad instructors the only way to improve schools?\u00a0 According to new research, maybe not.\u00a0 Few districts have the \u201cluxury\u201d of being able to fire low-performing teachers and replacing them with more effective ones.
