Excerpts from the piece appear below:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the last year, students in younger grades have recovered between 15% and 35% of the learning they had lost, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nwea.org\/research\/publication\/student-achievement-in-2021-22-cause-for-hope-and-continued-urgency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">data released<\/a> by the testing group NWEA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s the good news, particularly after a tumultuous school year that featured frequent staffing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/2021\/10\/1\/22704879\/shortages-teachers-bus-drivers-schools-why-covid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shortages<\/a>, behavioral <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/2021\/9\/27\/22691601\/student-behavior-stress-trauma-return\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">challenges<\/a>, and student <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/2021\/12\/1\/22811872\/school-attendance-covid-quarantines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">absences<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bad news is that students \u2014 particularly low-income, Black, and Hispanic students \u2014 remain far behind where they would be if not for the pandemic. Recovery has been anemic or nonexistent in middle school, NWEA finds. \u201cAt least the bleeding appears to have stopped, and we see some evidence that we\u2019re closing those gaps ever so minimally,\u201d said Karyn Lewis, an NWEA researcher. But at this pace, she said, it will take years for students to fully recover. \u201cThat timeline is pretty alarming.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the latest NWEA results, Chalkbeat reviewed a host of academic data released by states and testing companies this spring and summer.
