Excerpts of the piece appear below:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are real divides in this country on how to teach about race and racism, particularly on whether to teach about racism as a present-day phenomenon. Parents are also divided about whether schools pay too much or too little attention to race and racism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But most parents surveyed also say their child\u2019s school does a good job keeping them apprised of what\u2019s taught in class. More broadly, most Americans agree on certain issues: that schools should teach about the history of slavery and racism, that books shouldn\u2019t be banned for political reasons, and that schools shouldn\u2019t divide students by race for class discussions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are several important takeaways from these surveys, focusing specifically on efforts to achieve racial equity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One poll <a href=\"https:\/\/polsci.umass.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/CRTandRaceinAmericaToplines.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">found<\/a> that 51% of adults favored tracking students by ability level, even though the question said that some fear that this will exacerbate racial inequities. Only 19% opposed tracking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pie-network.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Updated_Views-on-Race-Related-Issues-in-K-12-education_Echelon-Insights.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">survey<\/a> asked about grouping students by race \u201cto encourage students to discuss their experiences with others who share their racial or ethnic background.\u201d 76% of voters described this practice as harmful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most Americans of all races also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2022\/04\/26\/u-s-public-continues-to-view-grades-test-scores-as-top-factors-in-college-admissions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">favored<\/a> using standardized test scores as a part of college admissions, despite recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/2020\/5\/18\/21262897\/coronavirus-sat-act-university-california-research-equity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pushback<\/a> that these tests discriminate against Black and Hispanic students. And most also opposed race-based preferences in college admissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But polls show significant support for ideas like having students read a racially diverse set of authors or learn more about <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/13s0oXZt9kSt9QWSR_W3XI1Dbq_burvKN\/view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Black history<\/a>.
