But a&nbsp; new and growing body of research suggests that professional learning, <a href=\"https:\/\/annenberg.brown.edu\/rppl\/improving-teacher-professional-learning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">done well<\/a>, can <a href=\"https:\/\/education.brown.edu\/news\/2020-09-09\/teaching-conditions-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">both increase teacher morale<\/a> and raise student outcomes. This means it is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nap.edu\/catalog\/25603\/changing-expectations-for-the-k-12-teacher-workforce-policies-preservice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Grounded in the content and curriculum<\/a> of the teachers receiving it;<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/articles?id=10.1257\/app.1.4.85\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dependent on the expertise<\/a> of facilitators or colleagues;<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.3102\/0162373719849044\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Designed to facilitate teacher collaboration<\/a> and;<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/eric.ed.gov\/?id=EJ1162747\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Aligned with the stated goals, standards and policies<\/a> of the school or school system.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, effective professional learning should be relevant, so teachers should not perceive a disconnect between it and their daily work. And, <a href=\"https:\/\/peabody.vanderbilt.edu\/TERA\/Professional_Learning_Landscape.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">quality is more important than quantity<\/a> \u2014 how valuable the experiences are matters more than the number of hours spent in the training.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, despite these promising outcomes, research on teacher professional learning too often focuses on whether a program works, not on the how and why. More information is needed about specific features that make some programs more effective than others, so designers understand how to create and implement better teacher learning opportunities. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rpplpartnership.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Research Partnership for Professional Learning, a collaboration of professional learning organizations and researchers at the Annenberg Institute<\/a> at Brown University, is uniting experts to drive a transformation of professional learning research and practice in the United States.
